Officials meet with residents to discuss future of interchange

Transportation partners including the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Dakota County and the city of Burnsville are seeking feedback from the community about a new interchange at State Highway 13 and County Highway 5 in Burnsville. The community is invited to an open house on Thursday, Feb. 3, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Burnsville City Hall, 100 Civic Center Parkway.

The open house is an opportunity for residents, business, and commuters to learn about the project, meet with members of the project team and provide comments on the project. It is the first of three Final Design open houses.

The work will remove access along Highway 13 and Highway 5 and construct frontage roads where needed. It will also provide an interconnected sidewalk or trail system and a noise wall along the southeast frontage road.

The intersection at Highways 13 and 5 was the number one recommendation for improvement along Highway 13. A corridor study found crash rates at the intersection of Highway 13 and Highway 5 to be higher than average for similar intersections.

Some of the benefits of a new interchange include improving connectivity between river, rail and road traffic; improving the flow of freight traffic, improving safety for motorists; creating economic development opportunities; and improving mobility and relieving congestion.
