Residents cautioned that Thompson Lake aeration could create thin ice

An aerator will bring much needed oxygen to the fish of Thompson Lake, but Dakota County warns that installing the device may create open water or dangerous ice conditions. Aerating could begin as soon as the first week in January with plans to continue for the next several weeks. The area will be marked with warning signs and the public is asked to stay away from the area.

As snow and ice cover the lake, aeration is needed to provide sufficient oxygen to fish and aquatic plants. Without aeration, lack of oxygen could kill fish and vegetation.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued a permit to aerate because it consistently stocks the lake with crappies, bluegills, largemouth bass and northern pike and aeration is needed to keep those fish alive through the winter.

The lake aerator is a floating pontoon device that pumps fresh air into the lake. It will be placed in an area near the fishing pier.
